Energy Revolution

An international energy revolution is underway. Future climate change is inextricably linked to future energy solutions. Capping the global temperature rise at under 2 degrees as laid out in the Paris Agreement calls for fundamental changes to energy production and consumption. With "Energy Revolution" the Astana EXPO-2017 Future Energy Forum provides a vital space and opportunity to focus on the international energy transition.

The Future Energy Forum of Astana EXPO-2017 marks a new and pioneering chapter in the story of global discussions on dealing with climate change and new energies. As host of Astana EXPO-2017, Kazakhstan looks to usher in a new era of future energy development. The Future Energy Forum is designed to inform, inspire and innovate, foster participation and exchange, and actively create a global platform dedicated to the international progress of global renewable energy.

With its rich natural resources and geopolitical status, Kazakhstan is uniquely positioned to establish a new Eurasian energy market and become a role model for future energy– bridging East and West. International experts, leaders, and visionaries from all key fields offer inspiring visions of our global energy future, challenging us to see the international energy revolution as not only essential, but both inevitable and possible.

Culminating with the Astana EXPO-2017 Manifesto of Values and Principles, the Astana EXPO-2017 Future Energy Forum is where the comprehensive story of future energy unfolds.

Hosting the “Energy Revolution” is British presenter Dallas Campbell. He is a regular presenter of BBC Four’s the Horizon Guide series – an archive show that charts the progress of scientists through 50 years of the BBC’s Horizon series, and The Drake Equation: The Search for Life – a personal investigation into the science and history behind our efforts to find life beyond the Earth.

Session 1210:10 AMHall 2

Do We Need an Energy Revolution?

In December 2015 the Paris Climate Accord was signed by 195 nations, all agreeing to reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide to net-zero within the second half of this century. This implies nothing less than a global Energy Revolution. But the proclaimed contributions do not yet add up to a solution. This talk asks the question why this Energy Revolution is necessary? Key points are the impact of climate on nature and human society, the economic damages of sea-level rise, and global repercussions of increasingly extreme weather conditions.
